Cinema exhibition faces a number of challenges in the future. As well as the practical and economic problems of responding to digitalisation, there is the continuing challenge of engaging audiences with cultural cinema.
In November 2011, a group of academics with research interests around cinema exhibition and cinema audiences gathered in Norwich to discuss the challenges ahead with those working within cinema industries.
The symposium included sessions at the University of East Anglia's School of Film And Television and Cinema City under the collective banner New Forms of Cinema Exhibition: Film Consumption and Critical Reception in the Digital Age
By creating greater dialogue between academics and the industry, the symposium was designed to help academics gain a better understanding of the concerns facing those associated with exhibition and to give the industry a better understanding of the potential resources available to them from academia.
This website aims to build on the great work started at the conference, allowing those who attended to reconnect and continue the debates on the future of cinema exhibition.
